Saying goodbye to our Butterfly friends!

We have had such an exciting two weeks!  Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming a new friend to our class :)  We have also been watching our classroom caterpillars turn into their chrysalis and then we watched them turn into beautiful painted lady butterflies!!

We transferred our chrysalis to the mesh netting.  We put 2 in each and then our last mesh netting had 3.

A closer look ...

Here is what the chrysalis looked like when we put them into the mesh netting

H.M made a butterfly to put in the butterfly cage!

After the butterflies emerged from their chrysalis we put them out at the science center for the children to take a closer look.  D.R (SK) decided he wanted to draw them

S.B and S.Y watching our beautiful butterflies!

L.M made a butterfly book

R.D and H.M made some beautiful art  :)

We have been doing a great deal of writing in the past two weeks!!!

We also turned out dramatic play area into a Beauty Salon "Sparkle Bar".
We made hairstyle books for both girls and boys.

We also used pipe cleaners to add highlights to our hair  :)  Our beauty salon also had a nail salon area.

We also made some creative art pieces using various flowers and greenery.

R.T and C.C enjoyed making this art :)

C.S made two superheros "Green-Man, and Fire-Man".

M.H made a book.  We love all the writing  :)

E.S and A.B painting at the art center

We have been learning about various types of musical instruments this past week, and how to keep a beat!

We also made our very own musical instruments from various items collected in the classroom :)

We also had some very creative friends in the block area building boats and islands.

Friday morning we had the pleasure of releasing our butterflies into the wild. This was such a neat experience for everyone.  Very beautiful!

We are very sad to see them go.  Although it was an amazing experience to watch the life cycle of our butterflies  :)

We hope everyone has a great weekend!
See you on Monday  :)

Chrysalis and Mother's Day Tea :)

We had such a wonderful week!  We have continued to talk about the caterpillar life cycle.  Our dramatic play area is still a butterfly sanctuary.  Some friends like to pretend that they are beautiful butterflies in this area or that they are caterpillars in their chrysalis.

We also made some butterflies out of coffee filters to hang in our Butterfly sanctuary

We have had a very exciting transformation happening with our caterpillars.  They have started to form their chrysalis :)

We also were very interested in bugs this week and decided to do some research on them.  We drew some pictures, made booklets and also watched a few short video clips.

There has been a great deal of writing!!  Great work :)

We continued to talk about 3D shapes and made various structures using 3D shapes.

E.S made a birthday hat and A.T made a butterfly net

We did a group activity where each student was given a 3D shape and they were to match it with four choices of "cube, pyramid, cone or sphere".

R.D drew some 3D shapes on the blackboard :)

C.C and S.B made a castle using the 3D shape blocks

We have some smart cookies in the class who also knew what 2D shapes were and were pointing them out in the classroom.

Sadly we had to say goodbye to our chickies this week. They had to go back to their farm.  We sure did have a great time looking at them :)

Friday was our Mother's Day Tea!!!  We are so happy that so many mothers, grandmothers, and aunts were able to attend :)

We hope you all had a wonderful weekend!!!

Caterpillars and Butterflies / les chenilles et les papillons

We had a wonderful week exploring caterpillars and the life cycle of the butterfly  :)

We are very lucky to have our classroom caterpillars. We have been watching them grow and some of them are starting to make their chrysalis.  This is very exciting for us to watch.

R.T was noticing how small our caterpillars were when we got them.

S.H and C.C observing our caterpillars.

S.A and A.T were drawing picture of the caterpillars :)

E.S was practicing her french words (butterfly and caterpillar)

We asked the children a few questions about the life cycle of the butterfly...

* F.C - baby caterpillars
* S.O - I think there's white inside
* A.T - I think he might be growing inside
* R.K - I think it's brown inside

*D.R (SK) - I think it's dark in there

* D.R (jk) -  Leaves
*L.M - Strawberries
* A.B - Grass
* R.D - A watermelon just like inside the hungry caterpillar
* S.B cabbage
*C.C - Icing

What do you think caterpillars do inside the chrysalis
* R.T - They sleep
* F.C - They grow
* S.Y - They are hiding
* C.C - They are growing into a big beautiful butterfly
* R.D - They eat dark things from when they were hibernating inside their cocoon
* H.M - They play hide and seek
*S.B - They are getting a costume
* S.O - They spin their cocoon while they are sleeping, and growing a pair of wings
*D.R (SK) -  You have to wait a while and then they magically turn into a butterfly

Where do you think butterflies fly too
* L.M - To get food
* F.C - Maybe go back to their home
* C.S - To get a drink of water
*C.C - Go to find some shells to hide in
*B.M - to make babies
*T.H - To play cat and mouse
*A.B - To go somewhere warm so that they can get war and not see snow on the ground
*D.R (SK) - Before they lay eggs they get pollen
*H.M - they get nectar

We have also been drawing pictures of the butterfly life cycle. We have decided to also turn our dramatic play area into a Butterfly Sanctuary!  We started to make a chrysalis out of paper mache that we are going to add to our sanctuary.

R.T helping to make the Chrysalis

Letting the paper mache dry.  Hopefully we will be able to paint it green this upcoming week :)

We also went to Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Moore's classroom to visit the baby chick eggs.

They will hopefully hatch this upcoming week! :)

This week we have also been talking about "Inferring".  We read the book "Don't let the pigeon drive the bus". We were inferring his feelings.  We were also writing our own versions of "Don't let the pigeon drive the bus".  We love all the writing we have been doing lately!  Keep up the great work :)

L.M making her Pigeon book :)

D.R (SK) did a great job working on his book

B.M worked very hard on his book!!

M.H writing his book

Friday we had a special visit from an Aboriginal Drumming group.  Some of our class were able to participate using various drums, and musical instruments.
